Research Project: Surveillance of Waterfowl in Mongolia for Avian Influenza Virus

Location: Exotic & Emerging Avian Viral Diseases Research

Project Number: 6040-32000-066-35-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2017
End Date: Aug 30, 2018

The objective of this work is to collect samples from wild waterfowl in Mongolia for avian influenza virus detection.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus can spread by wild bird movements. Some waterfowl species which are known to carry the virus migrate through Mongolia in several flyway routes which can eventually lead into Alaska or regions where birds bound for Alaska may also be present. In order to estimate the prevalence and to monitor which avian influenza viruses may reach North American through these migration routes samples will be collected from wild swan geese and bar headed geese during migration stopovers in Mongolia. Samples from other species may be collected as birds are available.
