Research Project: Identification and Durability of Novel Sources of Resistance to Pierce's Disease in Table and Raisin Grape

Location: Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2034-21220-007-03-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2016
End Date: Jun 30, 2019

Objective:
The objectives of this proposal are to identify sources of Vitis (germplasm and cultivars)resistance for use in table grape breeding, determine the durability of these sources of resistance, determine the relative susceptibility of existing table grape cultivars to Xylella fastidiosa, and test for anthocyanin precursor differences in infected and uninfected plants.

Approach:
1) Screen Vitis sp. germplasm and table and raisin grape cultivars for susceptibility to two strains of Xylella fastidiosa, 2) Evaluate resistant material for differential susceptibility and resistance durability to a panel of Xylella fastidiosa isolates representing the diversity in California, and 3) Determine the effect of Xylella fastidiosa on color development in black and red table grapes with varying levels of susceptibility.
