Research Project: United States Swine Pathogen Database

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-118-13-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2016
End Date: Oct 1, 2018

Objective:
Develop a centralized database into which veterinary diagnostic laboratories supply input data, and from which diagnosticians and research scientist can withdraw data.

Approach:
To achieve this objective, data from three viruses will be collected: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and senecavirus A (SVA). Four veterinary laboratories (have agreed to join with ARS in the development of a national database of PRRSV, PEDV, and SVA sequences to be located on the ARS high-performance computing and data storage system. This will be accomplished by the following activities: 1. Establish a framework for easy submission of field nucleotide sequence data by veterinary diagnostic laboratories. 2. Enable veterinary diagnostic laboratories to connect to this framework on the ARS new high-performance computing and data storage system. 3. Convert all incoming sequences into a universal format. 4. Develop a uniform database that is robust, searchable and adaptable.
