Research Project: Evaluation of New Alternative Uses for Peanuts, Peanut Oil, and Peanut Meal and Development of Innovative Production and Processing Systems

Location: National Peanut Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6044-13210-006-01-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2016
End Date: Sep 30, 2018

Objective:
Determine the economic feasibility producing or utilizing peanut non-edible and surplus peanuts in the Southeast US as a drop-in aviation fuel source.

Approach:
Previous research has shown that peanut oil provides an excellent blend ready drop-in fuel source for aviation fuels including JP-5, Jet A, Jet A-1 (jet fuels) as well as F-76 Marine Diesel and renewable hydraulic fluids. This study was prerequisite to further investigations into the economic feasibility of peanut as a feedstock for these uses. This study will consist of conducting a comprehensive Southeast US wide economic feasibility analysis focusing on impacts at the farm, buying point, processor, refiners, manufacturer, and consumers.
