Research Project: Monitoring Incursion of Virulent Stem Rust Races into the United States Through Sentinel Plots and Barberry Surveys

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-023-08-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 20, 2016
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
1) Establish stem rust sentinel plots to detect potential incursion of virulent stem rust races, including Ug99; and 2) Detect rust establishment on alternate host (Berberis spp.) and accessary hosts (cultivated and wild grasses) by field survey and race identification of rust samples.

Approach:
Establish sentinel wheat plots to detect potential incursion of virulent stem rust races, including Ug99, in farm fields and university experiment stations. The plots will be monitored for rust development, and samples will be collected for race identification. Stem rust infections on the alternate host of stem rust, Berberis spp. and accessary hosts (grasses) will also be monitored for rust infection and rust samples will be collected.
