Objective:
ARS will monitor populations of the impatiens downy mildew pathogen in plants and soil using genomic diagnostic tools.

Approach:
ARS will utilize previously developed techniques to perform species- and/or genetic group-specific in situ visualization, genotyping and quantification of the impatiens downy mildew pathogen from environmental samples (soil, water, residue, etc.) to study deposition and persistence of inocula in these environments. Techniques include a next-generation sequencing metabar coding approach, a comparative genomics approach, a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) approach, and simple repeat marker analysis.
