Research Project: Evaluation of an Improved Combine Head for Single-Pass Corn Stover Harvest

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-12000-015-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2016
End Date: Aug 31, 2021

Objective:
Evaluate impacts of rates of corn stover harvest on stover quality.

Approach:
The impacts of moderate and high rates of corn stover harvest on stover collection, quality, nutrient removal, and soil health impacts will be evaluated. Samples of stover will be evaluated for water content, nutrient content and ash. Samples will be dried, ground and prepared for nutrient analysis for analyses by a commercial laboratory. Bale weights will also be collected so that harvest rates from various plots can be calculated. Data from soil analyses will be used to compute soil health status using the Soil Management Assessment Framework. Crop yields will continue to be monitored to determine if repeated stover harvest has significant impact on crop productivity.
