Research Project: Phosphorus Acid MRL Barrier to EU Export of California Tree Nuts

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality Research

Project Number: 2034-43000-040-29-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2016
End Date: May 31, 2019

Retain California tree nut exports to European Union. Establish a long-term import tolerance, maximum residue level (MRL), for phosphorous acid by understanding its residues as related to tree nut production and marketing.

Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the California Tree Nut Colaition, US trade officials, and foreign counterparts to address retention of US tree nut exports to the European Union (EU). Research will be focused on the technical goal of obtaining residue data to establish a long-term import MRL for phosphorous acid. Research will be conducted in phases: 1) Phase I (Year 1): Establish quantitative distribution of residues in California field samples to support the extension of the temporary import tolerance. Phase II: Develop & optimize novel methodology for phosphorous acid.
