Research Project: Interseeding Alfalfa Into Corn as a Dual Purpose Cover and Forage Crop

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-12210-001-08-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 26, 2016
End Date: Sep 25, 2019

Objective:
Refine production practices and conduct economic assessments to develop reliable and profitable corn-interseeded alfalfa production systems for farms in the northern United States.

Approach:
The ARS and Cooperator will conduct multi-year/multi-site field studies to refine plant growth regulator applications, crop protection and weed control methods, nitrogen fertilizer management, crop seeding rates and planting dates, crop harvest dates, and crop variety/hybrid selection to optimize the yield and reliability of corn-interseeded alfalfa production systems. Other studies will evaluate soil and water conservation effects of interseeded alfalfa and compare the productivity and economic performance of corn-interseeded alfalfa relative to conventional production practices.
