Research Project: Collection and Cryopreservation of Honey Bee Germplasm

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-31000-006-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 29, 2016
End Date: Sep 30, 2021

Objective:
The objective of this project is to support the National Animal Germplasm Program by collecting and cryopreserving bee germplasm from commercial breeders and other sources.

Approach:
The cooperator will establish contacts with various honey bee breeders to seek permission to collect germplasm from their various populations. The amount of germplasm collected from each breeder will be mutually agreed upon. After collection the germplasm will be cryopreserved using methods developed by the cooperator. The cryopreserved samples will be transferred to ARS in Ft. Collins along with agreed upon information on the samples and breeder they were collected from.
