Research Project: Decision Support Tools for Cover Crops: Crediting Water and Nitrogen Conservation

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21660-005-036-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Nov 10, 2015
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
1. Demonstrate the role of cover crop surface mulches in mitigating soil water and nitrogen availability and subsequent drought stress and yield in cash crops grown on farms throughout the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US. 2. Deploy models both on the web and through extension outlets that show how cover crop management impacts soil water and nitrogen dynamics for each region and soil type in the mid Atlantic and Southeast.

Approach:
Both ARS and Cooperator will: 1. Collect data from farms throughout our respective regions. Analyze data coming from seed company funded research. Cooperator contributions: 1. Coordinate all extension and outreach activities.
