Research Project: Survey for New and Economically Important Viruses in US National Berry Germplasm Collections

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository

Project Number: 2072-21000-049-03-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2014
End Date: Oct 30, 2018

Objective:
Rubus and Vaccinium germplasm collections at the USDA Genebank in Corvallis, Oregon will be tested for important germplasm-borne pathogens to reduce the risk of disseminating these pathogens to genebank clients.

Approach:
Virus assays begun in 2014 will be completed. Candidate accessions for summer 2015 assays will be selected by genebank curators. Tissue samples will be collected from Rubus and Vaccinium clonal accessions and assayed by ELISA at the USDA-ARS National Clonal Germplasm Repository (Postman), and assayed by RT-PCR at the USDA-ARS Horticultural Crops Research Unit (Martin) in Corvallis. Test results from the cooperating labs will be compiled and added to the USDA germplasm database records for each plant accession tested (Postman). Results will be reported to genebank stakeholders, National Clean Plant Network colleagues, and considered for publication.
