Research Project: Characterization of Native Oak Germplasm of Horticultural Interest

Location: Floral and Nursery Plants Research

Project Number: 8020-21000-080-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2015
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
The objectives of this agreement are to clarify relationships among oak species with potential importance to the American nursery industry, concentrating on members of Quercus sect. Quercus native to eastern North America, clarifying the classification of the oaks and the relationships between selected populations and taxa, and develop markers that will be potentially useful for further research and evaluation of this germplasm.

Approach:
Oak populations of interest will be identified and sampled. Genetic markers will be developed using next-generation and other appropriate methods of genetic analysis, and results will be analyzed using statistical techniques appropriate for evaluating population structure and phylogenetic relationships.
