Apple growers have been forced to radically alter their management practices and include frequent applications of broad-spectrum insecticides to manage the invasive brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB). This project will establish a research and education program to enable apple growers to adopt attract-and-kill systems for BMSB management.

In both blocks, black pyramid traps will be baited with BMSB attractants (10-mg BMSB pheromone + 60 mg synergist) and deployed at the orchard border and block interior to monitor population dynamics of BMSB. As described above, BMSB will be managed in the "grower control" block using current insecticide management programs that include BMSB-specific insecticides. In the comparison block, BMSB will be managed using site-specific attract-and-kill trees. These attract-and-kill trees will be established using 100-mg BMSB pheromone + 60 mg synergist deployed in the canopy. Trees will be spaced 50-m apart in the perimeter of the block. Growers will maintain fresh insecticide residue on attract-and-kill trees using a 7-d treatment regime developed by the project team. All other pests will be managed according to established grower practices. Collaborating growers and project team members will closely monitor BMSB density and fruit injury in attract-and-kill treatment blocks. If BMSB density and fruit injury reaches provisional economic thresholds, growers will apply a whole-plot insecticide application targeting invading BMSB populations.
