Research Project: CEAP Support for Remote Sensing Products on Woody Plant Cover Evaluations

Location: Southwest Watershed Research Center

Project Number: 2022-13610-012-20-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2015
End Date: Dec 31, 2017

Objective:
Provide analyzed and categorized Landsat imagery of selected Major Land Resource Areas for woody plant cover values; 2) produce a manual with instructions for processing and categorizing LandSat imagery, and; 3) assist NRCS in the development of an ArcGIS toolbar for determination of woody plant canopy cover values from LandSat imagery.

Approach:
The NRCS would like to bring technology developed by the Southwest Watershed Research Center to quantify woody cover based on National Resource Inventory (NRI) data and associated aerial photography in-house. This transfer of technology will be effected by the development of both a manual explaining how to modify the approach depending on the NRI data and a computer-based tool to automate parts of the woody cover estimation process.
