Research Project: Characterization of Vineyard Microbiomes

Location: Crops Pathology and Genetics Research

Project Number: 2032-21220-008-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2016
End Date: Dec 31, 2021

Objective:
The objective is to partner with University of California at Davis to collect samples from vineyards in California and Oregon to analyze soil, leave, grape and/or grape must microbiome. This work will support Subobjectives 2.1 and 3.2 of 5306-21220-005-00D, Sustainable Vineyard Production Systems Key products that are anticipated from this work include genomic sequence data of the vineyard and grape must microbiome and peer-reviewed publications documenting factors that structure the microbiome.

Approach:
This effort is intended to leverage existing and ongoing research efforts looking at environmental and agricultural practices that structure the microbiome in the wine grape production system. Other means of gathering information could include interviews with the grower-cooperators. The Cooperator will provide guidance on DNA extraction, sequence amplification (16S v4 and BITS), library preparation and genomic sequencing at the UC Davis Genome Center. AMD01: Amendment No. 01 revises the original budget to allow for a student helper to be used to perform duties in the lab and field including but not limited to DNA extractions, general soil/plant sample collection and processing.
