Research Project: Effect of Cover Crop Growth Stage and Quality on Allelochemical Bioavailability in Soil Rhizosphere

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-166-04-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2015
End Date: Dec 15, 2018

Objective:
To characterize allelochemicals and nitrogen compounds from living and decomposing cover crops in soil rhizosphere; track their influence on crop: emergence and yield, and weed: emergence, growth rates, and fecundity.

Approach:
Project will rely on field-based studies involving the characterization of allelochemicals in the soil rhizosphere over several cover crop growth stages. These results will then inform a weed bioassay study to investigate the independent and combined effects of cover crops, herbicides, and allelochemicals on weed suppression. The first phase of this research will be conducted in the field, then later in the greenhouse.
