Research Project: Develop Stable Fly Management Practices for Cattle Operations

Location: Agroecosystem Management Research

Project Number: 3042-32000-010-06-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2015
End Date: May 31, 2019

To evaluate the efficacy of attractants and repellants for use in a push – pull management strategy for reducing filth fly impacts on livestock production.

Several chemicals have been evaluated in the laboratory and determined to be attractants or repellants for filth flies. The efficacy of these compounds in actual animal production systems has not been measured. Repellants will be applied to cattle or areas within feeding pens and filth fly presence compared to untreated animals or feeding areas. Attractants will be applied to targets or traps and fly numbers compared to untreated targets or traps. Compounds having sufficient efficacy will be used to develop a push – pull fly management strategy.
