Research Project: Improving Satellite Soil Moisture Spatial Resolution

Objective:
To 1) develop and validate techniques for increasing the spatial resolution of soil moisture products from the Soil Moisture Active Passive and other satelites that provide these products and 2) contribute to satellite product validation involving field campaigns.

Approach:
Coarse resolution passive microwave observations that are made by operational satellites will be disaggregated to higher spatial resolution soil moisture products. Different methodologies will be matched to the specific features of each available satellite system. The major focus will be on the new NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite and a methodologies that exploits higher resolution radar data. Data from field system experiments and in situ sites will be used for validation.
