Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research
Project Number: 2050-21000-035-10-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2019
Objective:
1. Assist seed certification agencies to amend current practices and improve their ability to detect, monitor and regulate virus in seed stocks.
2. Assist breeding programs to develop improved methods to identify and characterize useful virus resistance.
3. Assist growers with cost effective risk assessment tools to manage virus impacts on the farm.
Approach:
ARS scientists will participate in an integrated project with other national and international scientists. Activities will include: 1) developing and screening of potato germplasm material with resistance to viruses; PMTV, TRV, and PVY, 2) Development of segregating populations for study of resistance genes and development of molecular markers, 3) Screening of populations and breeding lines with putative resistance to one or all of these viruses, 4) Coordination of screening trials and inspector training schools (to be held 2 times during the grant) to transfer research results to stakeholders.
