Research Project: General Framework for Cooperation and Coordination for the Security Back-up of Plant Genetic Resources

Location:

Project Number: 3012-21000-015-010-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2015
End Date: Sep 30, 2019

Objective:
Plant Gene Resources of Canada desires to ensure that germplasm samples held in the Canadian national collection have a security back up of seed samples deposited at another location. PGRC will place priority germplasm not deposited elsewhere into secure black box storage at ARS National Plant Germplasm System National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation. Canada will be the sole distributor of this germplasm. ARS also desires having samples of its plant germplasm collections secured at other sites. As appropriate and when needed, it may request PGRC to house security backup samples of selected germplasm from the ARS NPGS when it is determined to be necessary. ARS will be sole distributor of these security backup samples of germplasm.

Approach:
PGRC and NPGS will provide security back up for each other’s germplasm. The germplasm will have been recently rejuvenated, characterized and the data entered into GRIN. A sample of about 1,000 high quality seeds (with no seed treatment) dried to near optimum moisture content for storage and placed in a sealed aluminum foil envelope will be provided. Each germplasm shipment will be accompanied by a list that will include for each accession an institute accession number that acts as an identifier, genus and species names and cultivar name (or other appropriate identifier) and the weight and number of seeds. Upon request, back up samples will be returned to the respective institute.
