Research Project: Population Genetic Studies of Penstemon eatonii and P. palmeri in Preparation for Germplasm Acquisition, Breeding, and Curation

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-018-08-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2018
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
Evaluate collected accessions from each of Penstemon eatonii and P. palmeri using both morphological and molecular methodologies to facilitate decision making in the breeding of penstemon for US markets.

Approach:
The groundwork for the decision making process for assigning penstemon crop descriptors, germplasm collection, and maintenance will be achieved by assessing the genetic diversity across all of the collected samples from Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and California. At present, there are no “Crop Descriptors” for either P. eatonii, P. palmeri, or for any Penstemon. We will develop, in collaboration with other researchers, the parameters for those descriptors and initially utilize them on the P. palmeri and P. eatonii accessions in a common garden experiment.
