Research Project: Southern Plains Climate x Agriculture Initiative

Location: Great Plains Agroclimate and Natural Resources Research

Project Number: 3070-11130-006-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2014
End Date: Aug 31, 2019

Objective:
To develop a Climate Hub that: 1) effectively engages farmers, ranchers, foresters and their advisors in the ongoing process of adapting Southern Plains agriculture to changing climate; and 2) collaboratively develops curriculum to educate producers, their advisors, college students, and the general public on the issues at the intersection of climate and agriculture.

Approach:
Redlands Community College (RCC) will help organize, host, and participate in climate Hub stakeholder meetings, planning meetings with other agencies and individuals, webinars, and other training events for the Southern Plains Regional Climate Hub. RCC will also subcontract for support staff and development projects as needed to support Climate Hub initiatives. Student interns from RCC will work with Climate Hub personnel. RCC will participate in the Climate Hub's development, evaluation, and implementation of curriculum to educate agricultural advisors on climate change impacts on agriculture and natural resources. RCC and the Climate Hub will also collaborate on the development of new academic programs in the domain of [Climate x Agriculture], the myriad interactions between climate and agricultural, including but not limited to climate-smart decision support for crops, pastures, rangelands, natural resources, and forestry.
