Location: Plant Genetic Resources Research
Project Number: 8060-21000-025-05-S
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 31, 2014
End Date: Jul 30, 2016
To study the: (1) timing of seasonal timing of floral initiation, (2) rate and extent of floral development prior to winter dormancy, (3) duration of endodormancy, and (4) rate of floral development following release from dormancy of the Malus collection at PGRU, Geneva, NY.
1. Timing of floral initiation will be evaluated microscopically utilizing microdissection and SEM. This will be carried out with the bloom time subset of 9 accessions at three time points during the 2014 season. 2. Rate and extent of floral development of 9 accessions will be determined at a single time point following defoliation and again in mid-winter. 3. Duration of endodormancy will be determined for a subset of the Malus core collection. Following chilling accumulation in the field, cutting will be incubated in controlled environment conditions to accumulate heat units and force budbreak. 4. Rate of floral development following release from endodormancy will be evaluated for all members of the Malus core collection during spring 2015. It will base on time taken from bud break to landmark floral development stages.
