Evaluate low-cost binders in conjunction with agglomeration/extrusion or other densifying technologies for forming coal powders into dense particles with sufficient exposed surface area to facilitate drying to a final moisture content of 3%-8%. Evaluate the properties of coal ash and tailings as a topsoil product.
Dewatered coal dust particles will be obtained from Omnis Mineral Technologies, LLC with a moisture content of approximately 20%. The coal particles will be mixed thoroughly with a binder comprised of high fructose corn syrup, pre-gelatinized starch, gelatinized starch, and/or other various gums and binder materials. The product will be agglomerated into particles approximately 3-6 mm in diameter or extruded into rods approximately 3-6 mm in diameter or compressed into sheets 3-6 mm in thickness. The penetration resistance/crush resistance of the rods, particles, or sheets will be determined using a probe penetration/crush test. The product will be dried and penetration resistance will be determined using the penetration test. The binders will be evaluated based on the wet and dry compressive strength and on cost. Coal ash and tailings will be evaluated as a topsoil by combining the ash with compost. The fertility of the ash and ash/compost mixtures will be determined by greenhouse tests and soil and plant tissue analysis.
