Research Project: Breeding Rootstocks Resistant to Aggressive Root-Knot Nematodes

Location: Grape Genetics Research

Project Number: 8060-21220-006-15-T
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Apr 22, 2013
End Date: Apr 30, 2017

Objective:
To develop improved grapevine rootstocks resistant to aggressive virulent root-knot nematodes (RKNs). To evaluate early-stage rootstock selections for resistance to aggressive RKNs and develop markers and other genomic resources for accelerating future rootstock breeding of resistance to RKNs.

Approach:
Grapevine rootstock germplasm will be screened for resistance to aggressive virulent root-knot nematodes, crosses made, and resistant seedling selections identified through screening. About 50 selections will be screened. Evaluation will be done on two mapping populations, PC1173 has about 75 lines and PC010103/PC0978 has about 200 lines to evaluate. To obtain reliable screening results of nematode resistance, 5 or more propagated lines will need to be screened of each line.
