Determine the efficacy of registered, unregistered and experimental fungicides on multiple classes of wheat and in barley across diverse environments.

The effect of fungicides on Fusarium head blight (FHB) development and deoxynivalenol (DON) accumulation will be evaluated across multiple locations and small grain classes. At each location, a regionally-adapted FHB susceptible small grain cultivar will be planted: in Minnesota we propose a single location, Crookston, and plan on using the hard red spring wheat cultivar Samson. For the barley trial, we propose to use the spring barley variety Rasmusson. To help ensure development of FHB, we will use grain spawn inoculum (F. graminearum growing on a substrate of sterile corn kernels). The F. graminearum-colonized corn grain will be applied at least two weeks before flowering to the ground throughout the trial. Mist-irrigation from head emergence through soft dough (Feekes 11.2) will be used to supplement natural rainfall and thus help provide a favorable environment for F. graminearum infection and disease development.
