Research Project: Performance of Brassica carinata as an Oil Feedstock for Biofuel

Location: Peanut Research

Project Number: 6044-41430-006-03-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2014
End Date: Sep 30, 2015

Determine the optimum operating parameters of a small-scale screw type oil expeller to expel oil from carinata for use in the production of biofuels.

Using carinata harvested during the 2014 harvest, crush the carinata seed using a 40 kg/h and a 150 kg/h screw press using various screw rpm, cake outlet size, and operating temperature. Measure the oil content of the raw carinata seed prior to crushing, record the weights of raw material entering the expeller, oil expelled, and the cake after expelling. Based on oil content of the raw material estimate the total oil available, and compare to the weight of oil extracted.
