Crop diversity is a useful indicator of local and regional socio-economic stability in less developed countries. Timely multispectral remotely sensed imagery can help identify crops, assess their conditions, and estimate their areal extents, however the reliable surface reference data, required to successfully process and interpret the remotely sensed imagery, are often difficult to acquire in these countries. Carefully designed experiments in surrogate study sites can provide appropriate test-beds for developing and testing crop mapping techniques. The overall objective is provide reliable and timely surface reference data to identify and assess a wide variety of crops in small fields in relatively inaccessible regions of the world. Specific objectives are to 1) measure spectral and biophysical characteristics of selected narcotic, agronomic, and horticultural crops throughout their growing season at BARC; and 2) evaluate various remote sensing systems and products for identifying and assessing the condition of these crops.

Small plots of cannabis, poppy, and selected other crops will be established in a secure field at BARC. Permission to acquire non-destructive measurements in additional agronomic (e.g., wheat, barley, corn, soybean, alfalfa) and horticultural (e.g., tomato, pepper, melon) crops at BARC will be arranged. Leaf optical properties and crop canopy reflectance will be measured throughout the growing season with spectrometers and multi-band radiometers. Leaf chlorophyll content, leaf area index, plant height, and stage of development will also be measured. Multispectral satellite imagery of BARC will be acquired throughout the growing seasons. Temporal profiles of reflectance and various vegetation indices will be examined to identify these crops, estimate their acreage, and assess their condition.
