Research Project: Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass with Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil

Location: Sustainable Biofuels and Co-products Research

Project Number: 8072-41000-095-21-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2014
End Date: Aug 14, 2017

The project aims to consolidate the knowledge in the fast pyrolysis of biomass technology, through a partnership of UFRGS and EMBRAPA Agroenergia, with the cooperation of ARS PI as visiting researcher.

The project involves activities at UFRGS and EMBRAPA Agroenergia. During the project period the ARS PI will visit UFRGS to give lectures, seminars and other educational activities related to the area of the project i.e., pyrolysis of lignocelluloses to fuels and chemicals. ARS PI will collaborate in the research of characterization of the pyrolysis products obtained from the laboratorial unit of fast pyrolysis built at GIMSCOP labs. Additionally, Ph.D. students from UFRGS will visit the ARS PI’s facilities at ARS laboratories in Wyndmoor, PA to carry out lab or pilot scale experiments of fast pyrolysis and characterization of the pyrolysis products. Experiments will include pyrolysis of solid wastes and microalgae, and post-processing of the products obtained.
