Determine the effect of citrus greening or Huanglongbing (HLB) disease on degreening citrus fruit using ethylene gas.
Early season citrus fruits often have more green pigment having not yet experienced cold nighttime temperatures that induce degreening. Disease-affected fruit have more green pigment due to disease-induced immaturity and may be resistant to degreening necessitating investigation of ethylene level, temperature, time combination testing. Healthy and diseased citrus fruit would be subjected to various ethylene concentrations, humidity, temperature and time combinations using a simulated commercial degreening chaimber at the University of Florida Indian River Research and Education Center next door to the USDA-ARS Horticultural Research Center.
