To determine the impacts of perennial grass-annual crop rotations on depth distribution of soil organic matter fractions, nitrogen mineralization, nutrients, and soil physical properties.
Given limited resources and recent assignment to a new research location, work plans will focus on sampling long-term field trials for changes in soil organic matter fractions, based on labile soil organic matter using aerobic mineralization, slowly changing soil organic matter using particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and resistant organic matter using near infrared analysis and combustion techniques for carbon and nitrogen. Anticipated outcome is a better scientific understanding of and real-world predictive ability of how integrated crop-livestock systems affect soil ecosystem services and environmental quality.
