To evaluate the influence of soil and manure characteristics on nitrogen mineralization in irrigated croplands. This will include field and greenhouse research to assess nitrogen mineralization with varying manure and soil characteristics, and assessment and improvement of process based models to estimate nitrogen mineralization in western semi-arid soils receiving dairy manure and fertilizers.
This work will evaluate the effects of soil type and dairy manure application rate and timing on nitrogen mineralization. Two ongoing long term studies (one managed by ARS and one managed by University of Idaho) will be utilized in this research to improve estimates of nitrogen cycling in an integrated dairy crop production system. In addition, work on producer fields will be performed to evaluate the variation in soil type on nitrogen mineralization rates of applied dairy manures. Nitrogen mineralization will be determined using a buried bag technique in the field and also via incubation studies. Total nutrient balances will be calculated based on soil nitrogen, manure and fertilizer nitrogen inputs, crop removal, and losses via gas emissions or leaching, which are part of the long term research presently being conducted.
