1) Evaluate effectiveness of preharvest fungicides in controlling postharvest diseases of table grapes and blueberries, 2) Evaluate the effectiveness of sulfur dioxide generating pads with or without modified atmosphere packaging bags for controlling postharvest rots and maintaining fruit quality of blueberries, and 3) Conduct sensory analysis for the above promising postharvest treatments.
Selected fungicides will be applied in the vineyard before harvest. In the vineyard, the percentage and severity of summer bunch rot clusters will be determined just before harvest. After harvest, harvested berries will be placed in cold storage for postharvest evaluation. Berries from each treatment will be used for evaluation of treatment effects on the control of gray mold resulting from natural infections as well as the spread of gray mold via fruit-to-fruit contact by mycelium of the pathogen. Postharvest evaluations will be done 5 weeks after cold storage and 2 days of room temperature after removal from cold storage. Freshly harvested blueberries will be packed into 6-oz clamshells. Clamshells with berries will be covered with a SO2-generating pad on the top of each layer in the carton. Clamshells will be wrapped with either MAP bags or regular liners and stored at 32F for 4 weeks, at which decay, fruit quality parameters, and sensory analysis will be evaluated. We will ask panelist to rate overall acceptability, sweetness, tartness, texture and off-flavor.
