1. Determine a best station density by comparing reductions of moth populations over a range of station densities. 2. Using one station density, determine the impact of station deployment on male and female moth numbers through CM generations, and assess impact on female mating status. 3. Determine efficacy of attract-and-kill stations for prevention of infestation of fruit in orchard blocks early season (early July) as well as at harvest. 4. Compare efficacy of the attract-and-kill approach within and outside of pheromonal mating disruption treatments, to determine the compatibility and interactions of the two methods.
Field experiments will determine the impact of deployment of attract and kill stations on populations of codling moths in apple orchards, then on oviposition on apples in orchards, and finally on rates of infestation of codling moth in apples in orchards. Attract-and-kill stations will be baited with a chemical feeding attractant that attracts both male and female moths. Impact of stations on moth numbers will be determined by monitoring moth numbers with traps baited with sex pheromone lures, and with blacklight traps. Subsequent experiments will count eggs on and near apples, and count codling moth larval damage to apples.
