To address the following questions: Will site vulnerability to accelerated runoff and erosion improve with understory recovery following juniper removal? How long a time period is necessary to obtain maximum hydrologic site stability following juniper removal? What are the variables and their associated threshold values that directly contribute to hydrologic recovery and site stability?
We propose to return to the three original SageSTEP hydrology study sites to collect sufficient data to address these additional questions at the small plot and rill scales, where each process can be isolated and quantified. We will not be able to collect the larger-scale data where all hydrologic/erosion processes are active. However, the small-scale data on the processes involved will allow us to provide relative estimates of changes in infiltration and erosion by rainsplash and overland flow. The proposed data collection will also allow us to develop hydrology and erosion model parameters for simulating the effects of tree removal treatments.
