Research Project: Monitoring Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in the Pacific Northwest

Location: Invasive Insect Biocontrol & Behavior Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-291-03-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2013
End Date: Nov 17, 2015

Compare Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) captures with a new BMSB light trap with standard pheromone-baited pyramid trap, and a combination-stimuli trap.

Brown marmorated stink bug pheromone will be synthesized at BARC and lures will be provided to Cooperator. Standard black pyramid traps painted with flat black exterior latex paint and topped with a collection device containing an inverted funnel to promote retention of captured BMSBs will be used in these studies. Traps will be provisioned with: 1) a lure containing the BMSB aggregation pheromone 2) a 24W compact fluorescent bulb; 3) a combination of these stimuli; or 4) left unbaited (control). All traps also will be provisioned with Hercon Vaportape II (Hercon Environmental, Emigsville, PA) as a killing agent to prevent escape from traps. These traps will be deployed in Pacific Northwest and sampled weekly. All BMSB adults and nymphs will be removed and counted.
