Research Project: Quantifying the Effects of Alternative Surface Inlet Protection Strategies on Water Quality

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-12000-013-16-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2014
End Date: Jan 31, 2015

To quantitatively evaluate the performance of three alternative drain inlet protection strategies on water quality.

Automated monitoring equipment will be installed in the field of a cooperating farmer so that water quality and flow at four intakes can be intensively monitored. Three of the intakes will be modified using practices designed to reduce sediment and nutrient transport in subsurface drainage. One inlet will be replaced with a blind intake, a grass buffer will be planted around another, and the third inlet will be encircled with a compost-filled filter sock. The fourth inlet will be a traditional, unmodified intake used as a control.
