Research Project: Liquid and Solid Phase Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Investigation of Bioenergy Feedstock and Value-added Products

Location: Commodity Utilization Research

Project Number: 6054-41000-110-09-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2014
End Date: Mar 1, 2017

The objective of this research is to utilize liquid and solid phase carbon-13 and phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to understand the chemical and physical properties of bioenergy feedstock and value-added products (biosorbents) produced under a variety of processing conditions.

The USDA-ARS will provide approximately 30 agricultural (by) product samples to the cooperator for analysis. These samples have been produced by varying heat and chemical treatment parameters. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis on each sample will be conducted. The USDA-ARS will quantify the solution chemistry of these samples obtained by utilizing systematic alternation of extraction procedures.
