1. The effect of planting date on charcoal rot (CR) development will be determined. 2. Determine the genetic inheritance of CR resistance.
1. Selected susceptible and resistant cultivars will be planted on three dates and assayed for charcoal rot development based on colony forming units (CFU) during the season and yield. Environmental parameters including soil and air temperatures and rainfall will be monitored throughout the season. 2. Populations of soybean derived from a susceptible and resistant parent will be screened for their reaction to charcoal rot based on CFU. The F1 seeds will be sent to off-season nurseries for rapid advancement and in 2015 the F2 populations will be phenotyped. Individual F2 seeds will be planted in an infested field. At R7 growth stage, individual F2 plants will be pulled and CFU determined. F2 seeds will also be available for screening in the greenhouse.
