Demonstrate the most efficient pest control tool in raised-bed fields through measurements of soil fumigant distribution, pest control efficacy, fumigant emission, and strawberry production under low permeability tarp.
Two field trials will be conducted to collect soil fumigant (1,3-D and chloropicrin) and pest control (critical pathogen and resident weed) data. Fields infested with soil borne pests will be selected for fumigation treatment. Treatments (4 replicates in randomized block design) will include: control, full rate (maximum allowed) under standard tarp (PE), low permeability tarp (TIF), and recycled plastics film (RPF), and reduced rates (2/3 and 1/2 of full rate) under TIF. Fumigant emission will be measured at tarped beds and uncovered furrows. Soil-gas concentrations will be monitored and correlate with efficacy data. Strawberry growth and yield will be measured. All treatment effects will be statistically analyzed. Treatments for efficient pest control will be determined and reduced rates under TIF for good pest control will be concluded.
