Develop a practical decision support system to improve N fertilizer recommendations for corn in Pennsylvania based on a biologically based soil test that can predict N mineralized from soil organic matter during the growing season and from rapidly decomposable substrates supplied prior to the growing season (e.g. cover crops, previous crop residues, manure additions, etc.).
Research will evaluate N supplied to corn in multiple field experiments in Pennsylvania. Crop yield responses will be evaluated with pre-season flush of CO2, permanganate oxidizable C, pre-sidedress nitrate test, and end-of-season basal stalk nitrate test. Research in Pennsylvania will leverage 10 site-years of cover crop experiments focused on assessing N retention and supply from cover crop monocultures and mixtures. We will also leverage three on-farm cover crop experiments conducted during two growing seasons to further test the predictive abilities of the flush of CO2.
