Location: Soil Dynamics Research
Project Number: 6010-12000-011-16-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2013
End Date: Sep 30, 2018
The purpose of this project is to conduct a full scale demonstration to utilize pulverized paper as a source of organic matter for degraded soils and validate the creation of soil conditions commensurate with establishment of native vegetation on disturbed Army training lands.
A full-scale demonstration is proposed for utilizing shredded paper for soil amelioration. Chemical analysis of the material will be conducted as well as for the soils where the demonstration will occur. Native grasses (Andropogon gerardii, Panicum virgatum, and Sorghastrum nutans) will be planted in study plots with increasing application rates of the material, replicated four times, and soil and vegetation data will be collected for two growing seasons to validate the usefulness of this material. Application rates will be based on the chemical analyses and results obtained from studies using other uncomposted materials. These rates will be compared to unamended soils to demonstrate the benefits achieved. The study site will require approximately 2 acres of land.
