Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research
Project Number: 8062-21000-036-18-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Dec 15, 2013
End Date: Dec 14, 2015
Main objectives of the research are: 1) To develop the hydroponic growth methodology to grow oil seed canola plants in hydroponics; 2) Modify Kochian hydroponic root system growth system and RootReader 3D platform to image the very fine canola roots and reconstruct 2D digital images of root systems into a 3D root system.
Kochian lab will modify the lab’s existing root system hydroponic growth system to grow the very fine root systems of canola in a black plastic mesh system which maintains the 3D root system architecture in hydroponics. The RootReader 3D platform will be used to collect 100 digital 2D images of the canola root system as the plant is rotated through 360 degrees. The RootReader 3D software will be used to reconstruct the series of 100 2D images into a 3D root system reconstruction. Then the RootReader 3D software will quantify 13 different root system architecture traits from the 3D root systems from individual canola plants.
