Apply time domain, nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) spectroscopy into determination of the oil concentration of whole oilseed and seed meal.

Grain and meal samples of Brassica species will be analyzed in a SpinPulse™ NMR spectrometer that can be easily calibrated with reference standard materials. Numerous oilseed samples have been acquired from farm fields in Washington, Oregon, and Montana to represent diverse growing environments. Both the whole oilseed and resulting seed meal of these samples will be analyzed for oil content by means of the NMR instrument. These measurements will be applied into calibrating our NIR in-line spectrometer and calculating the extraction efficiency of a cold pressing operation. Press parameters can be controlled in real-time to optimize pressing efficiency once the in-line spectrometer has been properly calibrated for oil concentration. In addition, an on-line version of the SpinPulse™ spectrometer with flow-through probe head will be evaluated for analyzing the oil concentration of the cylindrical cake that is extruded during pressing.
