Research Project: Biologically Based Fertilizer Recommendations to Meet Yield Expectations and Preserve Water Quality

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21660-004-21-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2013
End Date: Aug 31, 2018

Develop a practical decision support system for nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed based on potential soil biological activity and quality of organic matter and amendments.

Using a targeted approach, ARS will (1) evaluate N uptake from soils with a wide diversity of soil organic matter conditions in lab and greenhouse experiments and (2) evaluate crop yield responses to soil conditions and N fertilizer based on combined knowledge of pre-season N test with the flush of CO2 test and residual soil-profile nitrate and in-season determination of N sufficiency with the pre-sidedress N test. Multiple field locations will be identified throughout the Chesapeake Bay region for evaluation.
