The objectives of our proposed research are to 1) systematically organize and summarize the data sets from historic Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC) field studies to prepare them for use in evaluation of cropping system simulation models and 2) assess the utility of the CSM-CROPGRO-Cotton model to simulate cotton production in Arizona.
The project will emphasize key MAC data sets, since the data sets include detailed measurements of crop responses to irrigation, nitrogen fertilization, atmospheric carbon, and simulated hail damage. An important advantage is that the researchers associated with each field experiment are all locally available for consultation. All data will be organized in the file format required for DSSAT-CSM 4.5 model simulations. After compilation, data sets will be assessed for completeness and usefulness for evaluating model simulations. We will prioritize model evaluations for data sets that offer the most utility for conducting a thorough model evaluation. Model calibration will focus mainly on adjustment of the cultivar parameters of CROPGRO-Cotton to improve agreement between measured and simulated cotton phenology, biomass growth, and combined seed and lint yield.
