Location: Foreign Animal Disease Research
Project Number: 8064-32000-061-14-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 15, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2017
ARS, PIADC and the National Veterinary Laboratory (NVL) and the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) of Pakistan are engaged in collaborative research to collect, propagate and characterize field isolates of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) currently circulating in Pakistan to aid in vaccine matching and surveillance activities. This research project provides the additional support to conduct further molecular analysis of samples provided by Pakistani collaborators and to aid in capacity building by aiding in performing necropsies and implementing vaccine matching protocols. In addition ARS, PIADC will facilitate epidemiological analysis of the virus isolates to collaborators from UC Davis who will display the spatial, temporal and phylogenetics of the FMDV strains within Pakistan.
ARS, PIADC will conduct vaccine matching and sequence and phylogenetic analysis of samples provided by collaborators from NARC. In addition, serological cross-reaction analysis will be carried out and compared to the deduced amino-acid sequence of the P1 region of selected FMDVs. This information will be useful in selecting variants to be used for vaccine formulation. ARS, PIADC staff will travel to Pakistan to implement the vaccine matching protocol at NARC and to aid in performing necropsies of potentially persistent infected Asian buffalo and cattle to study the anatomical pathology of persistence. ARS, PIADC will provide epidemiological information received from Pakistani collaborators to collaborators from UC Davis to populate the Global Bio Portal to provide near-real-time updates to the OIE, USDA APHIS and Pakistani authorities.
