Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 17, 2013
End Date: Sep 30, 2015
To reduce incidence of diseases such as parasite infection and foot rot by using superior sires with known estimated breeding values and genotype for foot rot resistance.
Ram lambs from the USDA, ARS sheep flock are enrolled in the National Sheep Improvement Program whereby estimated breeding values (EBVs) are calculated by the Australian LambPlan program. Fecal egg counts will be determined on lambs by ARS, entered into LambPlan, and ram lambs with superior EBVs for parasite resistance will be selected as potential sires to be used by the Lincoln University Katahdin flock. Lincoln University will determine genotype for foot rot resistance. Select rams will be used as sires and data on offspring will be collected.
