Conduct research that proves postharvest treatments can be used to control key mite pests in the trade and marketing channels of California strawberries.
Utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS, USDA-APHIS, California industry, and foreign counterparts to adress pest-related barriers to export. Particular attention will be paid to the expansion and retention of export markets. This project is planned in phases as indicated below. Each phase will have its own goals and these goals will feed those of the following phase. Phase I: Establish a colony of key mite pests at USDA-ARS-SJVASC in Parlier, CA with the throughput necessary to routinely conduct fumigation studies on infested strawberries. Phase II: Conduct exploratory fumigations with methyl bromide and phosphine to establish the most tolerant life-stage of key mite pests. Phase III: Under fumigation conditions optimized to control the most fumigant-tolerant life stage of the most-fumigant tolerant mite, as well as spotted wing drosophila, conduct confirmatory fumigations at 64 F as well as 55 F for methyl bromide and 35'F for phosphine and its mixtures. Document results of trials including Munro methods for exposure measurement. Phase IV: Repeat confirmatory studies to achieve phytosanitary requirements of the export market (e.g., >30,000 treated, Probit-8.2 efficacy at 95% level of confidence). Phase V: Document phytotoxicity and residues that occur from dosages required for controlling the most fumigant-tolerant life stage of the most-fumigant tolerant mite, or spotted wing drosophila.
